Mathis, TX – Five Dead and Four Injured in Wreck on IH-37

Mathis, TX (January 23, 2021) – Officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating a fatal two-car collision that killed five people and hospitalized four more.  

The accident took place on Saturday, January 23rd at about 3:30 p.m. along IH-37, a half-mile east of Mathis.

According to reports, a Toyota Camry occupied by a driver and three passengers was heading southbound in the northbound lane of IH-37 when it collided head-on with a Dodge Grand Caravan occupied by a driver and four passengers.

Officers on the scene reported that five of the crash victims were pronounced dead at the scene, including a passenger who was thrown from the vehicle. 

The victims have since been identified as Trent Ryan Edge, 19, a resident of San Antonio, was a passenger of the Dodge Caravan. Noam Caleb Ortiz, 19, a resident of Alice, was the driver of the Toyota Camry.

Ruben Gonzalez Jr., 24, a resident of Alice, was a passenger in the Camry, Julian Reyna, 18, a resident of Alice, was a passenger in the Camry, and Kanyon Alegra, 18, a resident of Alice, was a passenger in Camry.

Four more victims were taken to Spohn Shoreline in Corpus Christi, where Helena Paige-Marie Dumas, 18, a resident of San Antonio, was pronounced dead later that evening.

This accident is under investigation by DPS Troopers.
