Ricardo, TX – Major Crash Sends Eight to Hospital on Hwy 77

Ricardo, TX (January 3, 2020) – A major injury crash took place on a highway near Ricardo on December 28 that sent eight people, including an undisclosed number of small children, to the hospital with injuries. 

The incident took place on Highway 77 at approximately 9:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes according to police. A truck with a total of seven family members present collided with the rear-end of a TxDOT safety truck. The safety truck had crash rails on the back-end that absorbed the impact of being rear-ended in order to give crew members a safety barrier while working on construction scenes. 

Three members inside the truck that rear-ended the TxDOT truck required transportation by helicopter to a nearby medical center for treatment. Four others involved in the collision were transported by ambulance to Spohn Kingsville Hospital. The driver of the safety truck was transported to the hospital for treatment of pain in his neck and back. 

The accident is currently under investigation by DPS officials at this time. No other information has been provided to the public.
