Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Texas sees a high number of pedestrian fatalities each year, with many accidents occurring along highways and busy roadways. According to state reports, over 700 pedestrians lose their lives annually in crashes across Texas. Many of these incidents involve vehicles traveling at high speeds, leaving little room for pedestrians to escape harm.
Understanding why these accidents happen can help raise awareness and improve road safety. Here are some common factors leading to pedestrian crashes:
- Poor Visibility – Many pedestrian accidents happen at night when visibility is reduced. Limited street lighting and dark clothing can make it difficult for drivers to see individuals walking near roadways.
- Vehicle Speed – High-speed roads increase the risk of fatal pedestrian accidents. A car traveling at 40 mph or more significantly reduces a pedestrian’s chance of survival in the event of a crash.
- Distracted Driving – Drivers who are texting, eating, or otherwise distracted may not notice pedestrians on or near the road, increasing the risk of accidents.
- Walking Near Highways – Pedestrians walking near or on highways face extreme dangers, as these roads are not designed for foot traffic and have fast-moving vehicles.
- Driver or Pedestrian Impairment – Alcohol or drug use by either the pedestrian or the driver can play a significant role in accidents. Impairment affects judgment, reaction time, and coordination.
