San Antonio, TX – One Dead, Three Seriously Injured in Car Accident at Culebra Rd and Zarzamora St

San Antonio, TX (January 03, 2022) – A 53-year-old woman died and several others were injured during a car accident caused by a drunk driver on the city’s northwest side on Saturday, January 1st.

The three-vehicle collision took place at the intersection of Zarzamora Street and Culebra Road when an eastbound Dodge pick-up truck ran a red light on Culebra Road and crashed into a Chevrolet pick-up truck.

The force of the impact sent the Chevrolet sailing through the intersection where it collided with a Jeep Patriot that was stopped on Zarzamora Street.

A 53-year-old woman, who was a backseat passenger in the Chevrolet, died at the scene.

Three other people in the Chevrolet were transported to University Hospital in serious condition.

One person in the Jeep was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in serious condition.

The driver of the Dodge sustained non-critical injuries and was transported to University Hospital.

Bexar County court records show that the driver of the Dodge, Edwin Sanabna Pena,  was discovered to be under the influence after the accident. He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and three counts of intoxication assault.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.

Fatal Car Accidents in Texas

Anytime the injured plaintiff or the respondent dies as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Texas, there are specific laws that will apply to any subsequent legal claim.

These laws state that even though the injured party died, their estate still has a legal claim against the respondent. The death of the victim does not mean that the negligent driver is somehow excused from their duty to remit financial compensation to the family or estate of the deceased.

These same laws come into play if the negligent driver was killed during the accident. Under these circumstances, the claim for damages would instead be brought against the estate of the deceased.

These specialized laws are applicable in cases where either the injured victim or the at-fault driver, or both, die as a result of the accident. The victim’s claim for financial compensation is valid regardless.
