San Antonio police reported that the collision occurred around 5:45 a.m. on March 4 in the 11000 block of Wetmore Road. A truck was backing out of a parking lot onto the roadway when the motorcyclist collided with the side of the vehicle. The impact threw the rider off his bike, which then landed on top of him.
Tragically, a passing SUV struck the man while he was on the ground. EMS arrived at the scene and pronounced him deceased. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to confirm his identity and cause of death. Both drivers involved remained at the scene and cooperated with police. No charges have been filed at this time.
We extend our condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.
Motorcycle Accidents in Texas
Texas roads see a significant number of motorcycle-related accidents every year. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that hundreds of motorcyclists are killed annually across the state, with many more suffering serious injuries. Accidents often occur due to limited visibility, road hazards, or right-of-way violations.
Understanding key motorcycle safety concerns can help riders and drivers alike prevent future tragedies:
- Limited Visibility: Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles, making them harder to spot, especially at intersections or when changing lanes. Drivers must check blind spots carefully.
- Right-of-Way Issues: Many motorcycle crashes happen because drivers fail to yield when turning or merging. Extra caution should be taken when sharing the road with motorcyclists.
- Road Surface Hazards: Potholes, wet pavement, and loose gravel pose a greater threat to motorcycles than to cars. Riders must stay alert and maintain control to avoid sudden hazards.
- Protective Gear: Helmets, gloves, and reinforced jackets can significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries in a crash. Texas law encourages helmet use, even though it is not mandatory for all riders.
- Parking Lot Dangers: Vehicles pulling out of driveways or parking spaces may not see an approaching motorcycle. Motorcyclists should be cautious around parked vehicles, and drivers must double-check before backing out.
When motorcycle accidents result in fatal injuries, surviving family members may have legal options. Seeking guidance from an experienced San Antonio wrongful death attorney can help determine if legal action is appropriate. Compensation may be available to cover funeral costs, loss of companionship, and other damages.
