According to San Antonio police, the crash occurred around 12:38 a.m. on March 8, at the intersection of West Travis Street and Northwest 24th Street. A Nissan Sentra heading south on 24th Street collided with a Chevrolet Silverado traveling west on Travis Street. Investigators determined that the driver of the Chevrolet ran a stop sign before the impact.
A 23-year-old passenger in the Nissan was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, both drivers abandoned their vehicles and fled the scene on foot. Officers located the driver of the Chevrolet, a 27-year-old man, a few blocks away and took him into custody. Police reported that he showed signs of intoxication and was transported to a hospital with minor injuries. Once released, he is expected to be charged with intoxication manslaughter and collision involving death. Authorities are still searching for the driver of the Nissan, who will also face charges for leaving the scene of a fatal crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the victim during this grieving time.
Fatal Accidents in Texas
Texas sees a significant number of fatal crashes each year, with the Texas Department of Transportation reporting over 4,000 traffic-related deaths in a recent year. Many of these tragedies result from reckless behaviors such as impaired driving, speeding, and failure to obey traffic signals.
There are several reasons why fatal accidents occur. Below are some key factors that often contribute to deadly crashes:
- Running Stop Signs and Red Lights: Failing to yield at intersections is a common cause of serious and fatal crashes. These violations often lead to T-bone collisions, which can be especially deadly.
- Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drugs severely affect a driver’s judgment, reaction time, and coordination, increasing the risk of deadly crashes.
- Hit-and-Run Accidents: Leaving the scene of a crash is not only illegal but also prevents injured victims from receiving timely medical assistance.
- High-Speed Collisions: Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to react and increases the severity of impact in an accident.
